September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. A month in which we honour those with paediatric cancer and highlight the need for early detection in order to increase the overall survival rate of children with cancer.

The World Health Organisation says that more than 80% of children with cancer in high-income countries are cured, compared to less than 30% in low- and middle-income countries. This can be attributed to late or a delay in diagnosis, inaccessible therapy, abandonment of treatment, death from toxicity (side effects), and avoidable relapse.

They state that when identified early, childhood cancer is more likely to respond to effective treatment and result in a greater probability of survival, less suffering, and often less expensive and less intensive treatment.

Early detection and treatment of cancer provides the best chance of success.

Background of KidzCan and the Rainbow Children’s Home

KidsCan is a Zimbabwean organisation dedicated to the early detection and treatment of cancer in children. They are a group of dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to provide adequate assistance and support to children in Zimbabwe. Their objective is to improve the survival rate and quality of life for children with cancer.

Throughout Zimbabwe, the organisation provides care to children and families impacted by cancer. Clinical care, advocacy, and case management are all part of their comprehensive services, which also include chemotherapy drugs, blood and blood products, CT and MRI scans, and transportation allowances. They also offer emotional help to children and conduct support groups and offer counselling for parents and caregivers.

KidsCan collaborates with communities, clinicians, government, and organisations to make a meaningful difference, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or race.

Rainbow Children’s Home provides disadvantaged children from rural regions and Harare suburbs, who have no relatives or friends in Harare, with a clean and friendly environment to recuperate from cancer treatment before returning home. Treatments and treatment times differ depending on the patient and type of cancer, but what remains constant is the need for a safe space where they can gradually begin to regain their strength both physically and emotionally, and have their spirits lifted by Rainbow Children’s Home’s caring and supportive staff.
